Other Useful Sources of Genealogical Information

Age Search is a service of the US Bureau of the Census. The confidential records in the Bureau's custody (covering 1910-2000) are searched and an official transcript of the results is provided. The fee for this service is currently $40.00. Access to the census records is strictly controlled under the US Code, Title 13, sections 8 and 9.

Social Security files can be searched by providing the name and Social Security number of the applicant, who must be deceased. Write to: Freedom of Information Officer, Social Security Administration, Baltimore, MD 21235. The current fee is $27.00. Information returned will be name of applicant at birth, date and place of birth, parents' names, sex and race. The Social Security Death Index is available online.

Recent veterans records are available from the National Personnel Records Center (Military Personnel Records) (NPRC-MPR) and historically from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

NARA also provides extensive information useful in genealogical research, including: Census Records, Military Records, Immigration Records (Ship Passenger Lists), Naturalization Records, and Land Records.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints' Family Search database and Family History Library Catalog are both accessible from your computer. Instructions and ordering info are included on the site.

Finally, RootsWeb hosts a Morris County, NJ Genealogy web page, which is maintained by the NJGenWeb Project. Access is free and further information is available on the page.
