Acquiring Genealogical Records in New Jersey
 
You may write, phone, or fax the State Department of Health for vital records, post 1878. Using a credit card, you may telephone (609) 633-2860 or fax (609) 393-4292. You will be asked to provide the information noted on the previous page and charged a $5.00 fee. The application for a record search is found on page 108 of Kern's International Vital Records Handbook (1994), or it can be downloaded from the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Adobe Acrobat (*.pdf) and Microsoft Word (*.doc) formats. The Bureau also maintains counter service, with an average wait of two hours.
New Jersey records for 1848-1878 are in the Genealogy and Local History Office of the NJ State Library.
Divorce records for 1900-1989 are kept by the Records Information Center of the state Superior Court. For records after 1989 contact the NJ county court that issued the divorce decree. A certified copy of a decree costs $10.00, payable by check or money order. Your request should include:
  • Docket number (if possible)
  • First and last names of the parties
  • Year of decree or (at least) 5 to 10 year range
  • Legal size, self-addressed stamped envelope
