Acquiring Genealogical Records in New Jersey

Contact the local (town or borough) registrar if you know the place of the birth, death, or marriage. You may also be able to use a local newspaper for obituaries or wedding announcements. Otherwise, requests should be directed to the State Registrar or State Archives.
The researcher making the request must provide:
  • name of person sought
  • place of birth, death, or marriage
  • (marriage records) names of bride and groom
  • (birth records) maiden name of mother
  • reason or need for the information
If a record is found, a certificate confirming the facts of the event and the identity of the person will be forwarded to the researcher.
Check Morris County Library's list of municipal offices for towns in Morris County for contact information regarding acquisition of the records described above.
