| Where to find birth,
marriage, & death records in New Jersey |
| Vital Records are records of births,
marriages, and deaths collected under the laws of the State of New
Jersey. These documents help to establish identity and verify events by
providing names, ages, and hometowns of individuals. Certain
restrictions govern the use of and access to these documents. |
| Records begin in the towns and cities of
NJ, within the office of the local Registrar of Vital Statistics.
Original records are sent to the State Registrar in Trenton; copies are
kept locally. Official collection of vital records began in 1848, but
county clerks did record information on marriages before that date. |
| The Guide to Family History Sources
in the New Jersey State Archives contains information on county
marriage records, and is available in many Morris County libraries. |
